I shifted to a new house recently, and got a chance to do my favourite activity: Organising my bookshelf. Ask any bibliophile, going through all their books and organising them might be their favourite thing to do. There are as many ways to organise your bookshelf as there are kinds of reader. So, here are 10 smart ways to organise your book library at home.

1. Arrange by Genre

This is what I follow and it works great if you have a large or small collection of books. Organising by genre makes it easy to find the books you are looking for. Also, it is a better way to organise your books if you want your next reads to be in rhythm with your moods.

2. Arrange by Colour

Organising the book library by colour is one of the most popular ways to arrange your books. It will give your shelf as the well as your room an artsy and energetic look. If you are a reader who has good memory with covers and likes to have colours on display, then this might be the best way for you.

3. Arrange Alphabetically

This is a proper library style system to organise your bookshelf. You can arrange your books alphabetically either by title or genre. This is a great opportunity to mix and match your bookshelf and see which one ends up besides which one.

4. Arrange by Size

Our bookshelves can have many kinds of books and they can all be in different sizes. Not seeing all books of one size together irks many so setting all books by size can be a visual treat. Here as well, get ready for an opportunity of mix and match.

An unusual way to organise your bookshelf but nonetheless a very fun one. You can arrange your books, as per the location the story is set in or birthplaces of the protagonist or the author itself. Would only recommend if you are getting extremely bored.

7. Don’t Forget to Stack Them Up

Arranging books vertically is not the only way now. Stacking books up not only lets you flaunt book spines, but also manage space. Certainly, your shelf will look neater.

8. Arrange Them According to How They Made You Feel

Now, this is an interesting way to group your books. No doubt, some books often spring up pretty intense emotions. So, maybe the books that made you laugh till your stomach was hurting can go in the left shelf while the books that made you cry your eyes out can go in the right. The best part about this style of arranging books is there is no wrong way to do this.

9. Put Your Unread Books Together

There is no denial to the fact that every bookworm has an overflowing TBR list. By grouping your unread books together, you will always a few books to pick up immediately after you finish one. This is also a good way to finish your TBR pile.

10. Deck Up Your Book Library

You don’t need to have only books on your shelf. You can add decorative pieces, showpieces, bookish merch and other tidbits for a dash of colour and it will make your shelf pop. You can also follow the 2/3rds rule: only fill 2/3rds of a book shelf and leave some open space.

There is no one way to organise your book library. But having some sort of uniformity among your books always looks good. You can choose whatever suits your shelf and you. Let me know in the comments below about your current bookshelf arrangement.

Happy bookshelf organizing!
