writing

I can shake off everything as I write, my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn.

Anne Frank

In my view, nothing would be more satisfying than writing down what’s in your heart and soul. We feel enthusiastic when we write about something or ourselves. We like to speak up as well as get heard. We write because we know something is missing or wrong in this noisy and busy world. Through our writings, we bridge that gap, give warmth to people’s hearts, and guide them through this crazy world. Also, when we write we feel brave and contented.

Writing = Talking to Oneself

Whenever we write our thoughts and views, we feel in complete control of ourselves. It’s like talking to our souls. If we want to rise compassion through our writings, we first need to be friendly and helpful to ourselves. Consequently, our words don’t remain mere words on paper. They speak, they reflect, and create magic. Writing helps in knowing our hidden abilities, good as well as bad. We discover something new about ourselves, something which was not known to even us. We create an imaginary world where praise as well as criticism belong to us. We can stop criticizing ourselves to cover up our insecurities. We don’t have to pretend anymore to know more than we do. That’s the first step in becoming less judgmental and more compassionate to others, too.

In my story, I am writing about a character who has been criticized by people as a bastard. When I wrote his feelings and how it affects his inner self, I learnt to sympathize with him. It is like I became him and wrote as he perceived. A few days back I met two children (brother and sister) who lost their mother due to COVID last year. Their father informed they had both become stubborn since then and behaved rudely. I could see the emptiness in those little eyes searching for their mother. The moment I realized their pain my eyes turned watery; I could sense what must be running inside them. Though it is a simple human gesture to feel compassionate in such a situation, I believe that writing different characters with different traits and reasoning helps to understand other people in a better way.

Why compassion matters in writing

A writer, I think is someone who pays attention to the world.

Susan Sontag

What motivates me to write? I think most people write because they understand some aspect of their society is not working as expected or the world needs an intellectual approach that can reach the people who are persuaded to think irrationally. This world is not perfect but can become perfect only if we practice compassion and kindness. The current era belongs to the Internet. Experts believe that the industrial age is over, we are living in the information age. The Internet has revolutionized the whole world. It brings the humans closer to each other. Through social media, we can share our thoughts with millions. Instead of writing malice, if we write something positive to boost the spirit of the disheartened and dejected people, it will do wonders in improving lives of people across the world, thus strengthening human society.

Authors and writers who lived in every age of human civilization had motivated and helped people to come out from the darkness and enlightened their minds. We might be living in the most advanced world today, but we are struggling with stress and depression because of rapid changes in the mindset of the people. Writing with compassion can inspire millions in this world, maybe someone amongst us can become the knight in the shining armour. Remember, we all in this world have been sent for a reason, for a role to fulfil. Instead of judging others, let’s concentrate on where they are coming from. We might not change the world entirely, but we can bring glad tidings for many.

Listen with ears of tolerance, see through the eyes of compassion, Speak with the language of love.
