Sitting in the comfort of a bean bag chair, fingers radiating the itch to type on the keyboard at breakneck speed. That is what happens when a writer takes a break from writing and then returns with an insatiable need to let the words flow in a tsunami-like fashion.

Being an avid reader since I can remember, I know that one of the genres which pulled me towards reading and writing was The Classics. Jane Austen, Bronte Sisters, Hardy, they all had a force so strong that once pulled inside, you became one with their words. Having read endless fiction, non-fiction, and self-help books, I am still drawn to the old classics. To date, my favorite book is Pride and Prejudice. To date, I have yet to read a love like the one Heathcliffe harbored for Cathy in Wuthering Heights. I am sure, many like me will agree that the allure of classics is undying.

Why are they so important? Don’t people like the new age romance and books with millennial jargon and upbeat themes? Pondering on the thought gave me a flicker of explanation. The classics keep us grounded. The earthiness of the Victorian era, the corsets, the heated exchange of simple glances, passing letters full of passionate words, mustering the courage to voice one’s feelings, the strength of the female protagonist rising up in the face of a problematic situation, sacrificing for her family shows pure heart and soul of the story. The writers dig deep into the emotions and bring out the beauty of simplicity and maturity. The writers also showcased the wrongs of discrimination regarding the rich and poor; class systems and patriarchy. They showed how even though in a society where women were treated a tad bit inferior to men, they fought their way to voice their opinions. Be it Scarlet from Gone With the Wind, or Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice.
